Salome Maina, director of the Directorate of Teacher Education, advised practicing teachers with Primary Teacher Education and Early Childhood Development Education degrees to upgrade in order to comply with the reforms.

Maina stated that graduates with PTE and ECDE, as well as those who graduated before the CBC introduction, must upgrade to comply with the new education system.

She commented on Friday as she presided over the 20th graduation ceremony of the International Teaching and Training Centre in Isinya, Kajiado.

More than 1,200 graduates received Diplomas in Teacher Education, Primary Teacher Education, and Early Childhood Development Education, in addition to numerous TVET courses.

According to the changes, all professors teaching in Kenyan institutions should hold at least a Diploma in the various disciplines they teach.

“So, for those who are graduating in PTE and ECDE with certificates, I believe it’s a one-year course for you to be able to upgrade to Diploma so that those who are graduating can conform,” she went on to say.

Graduates were also encouraged to register with the Teachers Service Commission.

According to Maina, all teachers must embrace the competences demanded of a 21st Century teacher, therefore the necessity for conformation.

The Director further stated that the majority of the policy documents were available on the websites of the Ministry and TSC.

The TSC Act (2012) and TSC Code of Regulations for Teachers (2015) require the Commission to maintain the Teachers’ Register. Since 1967, the Commission has registered about 670,000 teachers. PROMOTED
