133 KCPE 2023 Candidates Awarded Wrong Marks in Various Subjects. The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) CEO David Njeng’ere has acknowledged irregularities in the results of the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examinations. Njeng’ere disclosed that 133 candidates were mistakenly awarded wrong grades. When the results were released on November 23, 2023, he said that calls were received from the concerned schools expressing dissatisfaction with the results achieved through SMS code 40054.
In particular, Njeng’ere highlighted concerns about English and Kiswahili, with candidates questioning their low grades. After reviewing all the appeals, the Knec confirmed the 133 affected candidates and assured that their cases have been resolved, with the results updated accordingly.
The Director-General further revealed instances where results were misaligned, causing Kiswahili marks and grades to be placed in the Kenyan Sign Language section. In addition, errors occurred in science, social studies, and religion classes where the plus (+) and minus (-) signs were incorrectly abbreviated.
Njeng’ere clarified that the SMS results were affected due to configuration issues and ensured that the results on the KNEC portal remain accurate. The Board of Examiners immediately notified the SMS service provider and the text message error was quickly resolved.
To ensure accuracy, Njeng’ere advised candidates to visit their schools and get the official preliminary results, stressing that any queries should be addressed within the stipulated 30-day period. Despite the challenges, the Ministry of Education released the 2023 KCPE results for 1,406,557 candidates on November 23, with the top scorer scoring 428 marks.
