New JSS Recruitment Requirements 2023/2024. Recent changes in the professional status of P1 teachers for secondary school teaching (JSS) in Kenya are necessitated by the implementation of competency-based curriculum. This shift in education shifted much of the academic focus to secondary schools and reduced the workload in primary schools.

From 2023, students currently in sixth form in the 8-4-4 system will progress to Form 1 after completing the Kenya Certificate of Basic Education (KCPE) examination. Secondary schools will play an important role in preparing 7th, 8th and 9th grade students for the new 2-6-3-3-3 Competency-Based Curriculum (KBK) system after the sixth grade national exam. .

To adapt to this change, the Ministry of Education and Culture selected some primary schools to be converted into secondary schools in an effort to improve the infrastructure of secondary schools (JSS).

In response to the shortage of teachers in primary and secondary schools, the Ministry of Education and the Department of Teachers decided to deploy primary teachers to supervise secondary school students in secondary schools.

Primary teachers are those who meet certain criteria, whether they have a career in special education, early childhood development education, a diploma or diploma with an additional component of high school, or a grade C + in KCSE. This change is aimed at improving the quality of education at the primary and secondary levels.

The Teachers Service Corps (TSC) is looking to place P1 teachers with such skills in secondary schools. These careers include diplomas, degrees, postgraduate degrees, and even master’s and doctoral degrees for teaching in secondary schools (JSS).

In conclusion, this new TSC career for P1 teachers appointed to teach JSS reflects the changing educational landscape in Kenya and the need to adapt to a competent curriculum. This change is aimed at improving the quality of education at the primary and secondary levels.
