Teachers in Rural Areas Set To Benefit most From New Salary Increment

According to reports, teachers residing in rural areas are set to benefit significantly from recent revisions to their salaries and allowances. The updated salary structure not only ensures that teachers will see pay raises ranging from 2.4% to 9.5% starting this month but also introduces improved housing allowances based on regional classifications.

In this new salary system, entry-level primary school teachers will earn between Ksh.22,793 and Ksh.28,491. Moving up the ladder, job grade C1, which includes primary, secondary, and lecturers, will receive salaries ranging from Ksh.28,491 to Ksh.35,614. Meanwhile, grade C2 teachers, lecturers, and special needs educators will earn between Ksh.36,621 and Ksh.45,776.Grade C3 educators and lecturers will enjoy salaries between Ksh.44,412 and Ksh.56,514. Going further up, job grade C5 teachers will receive compensation ranging from Ksh.62,272 to Ksh.78,667. For senior positions, such as senior masters, headteachers, deputy principals, and senior lecturers in job grade D1, their salaries will fall between Ksh.77,840 and Ksh.95,101.

In contrast, those in job grade D2, including deputy principals 2 and senior master 1 teachers, can expect to earn a minimum of Ksh.91,000 and a maximum of Ksh.110,000.

At the highest levels of the teaching profession, senior principals in job grade D4 will receive salaries between Ksh.118,000 and Ksh.143,000, while Chief Principals, positioned at the top of the pay scale in grade D5, can anticipate basic salaries ranging from Ksh.131,000 to Ksh.159,000.
However, the benefits extend beyond basic salaries. Teachers, particularly those in rural areas, will find comfort in the harmonization of house allowances. These allowances have been categorized into four clusters, covering all regions of the country.

Under this new structure, a grade B5 teacher residing in cluster one, which includes Nairobi, will be entitled to a house allowance of Ksh.6,750. For those in cluster 2 areas, including Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Nyeri, Eldoret, Thika, Kisii, Malindi, and Kitale, the allowance will be Ksh.4,400. Cluster three, comprising other former municipalities, will provide similar amounts, and the same applies to all other regions in the country.

Further up the hierarchy, a Chief Principal living in Nairobi will be eligible for a Ksh.50,000 house allowance, while those in cluster 2 will receive Ksh.35,000. Cluster 3 residents will enjoy Ksh.25,000, and those in cluster 4 will receive Ksh.21,000 as house allowances.

These adjustments have already been implemented in the August payroll. Notably, all other allowances, including hardship, commuter, leave, and disability allowances, remain unchanged.

In conclusion, the recent salary and allowance revisions promise a fairer compensation structure for teachers, with those in rural areas benefiting the most. These changes aim to recognize and support the dedication and hard work of educators across the country.
