Teachers who had reached the legal retirement age of 60 years were given contract letters in May, as part of TSC’s effort to stabilize the education system in this region.

TSC CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia expressed her concern about the mass retirement and its potential impact, stating, “This mass retirement will create a terrible teacher shortage in the area, which already has a teacher shortage due to the recent departure of non-local teachers.”

Unique Compensation Package For Hired  Teachers

To alleviate this crisis, TSC is now providing a unique compensation package.

The Commission will hire retired teachers from the area on a three-year contract, which, remarkably, includes an additional three years of retirement after they reach the legal retirement age.

This move not only incentivizes experienced teachers to continue their service but also helps bridge the critical gap in the education sector of these counties.

Priority Given to Northern Region

The Northern region has been given the highest priority in this new initiative.

This is because many teachers, especially non-locals, have been reluctant to work in these challenging areas due to various factors.

Action Required for Retired Teachers

Teachers in these counties who have reached the retirement age are encouraged to act promptly. They must submit their information to the TSC county offices if they wish to receive contract extension letters.

Additionally, once the government’s budget is approved, intern teachers in these regions will receive letters, granting them permanent and pensionable terms, further fortifying the teacher workforce.

In a related development, 22 head teachers in Kisumu County have had their contracts extended, a move that underscores the importance of experienced educators in the education system.
