TSC STOPS EMPLOYMENT OF INTERN TEACHERS.

TSC today news (intern). The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is undergoing a significant change in its teacher recruitment approach.

In recent developments, the practice of hiring trainee teachers as interns has been discontinued. This decision was influenced by recommendations from the National Assembly Education Committee,

which proposed that TSC should pivot towards hiring teachers on long-term retirement contracts.

During a Committee meeting, Dr. Nancy Macharia, the Director of TSC, disclosed the Committee’s intent to recruit an additional 10,000 trainee teachers.

This move is part of a broader effort to address the staffing requirements in the education sector,

especially in the context of the 100% transformation initiative, which is putting substantial pressure on the teaching workforce.

One of the challenges TSC faces in this endeavor is budget constraints.

While the commission’s overall budget stands at Ksh 15.4 billion, its recruitment budget is limited to just Sh2 billion.

To bridge the initial staffing gap and meet the growing demand for university instructors,

Previously, TSC had implemented an internship program for teacher recruitment, which attracted over 10,000 registered teachers.

Under this program, primary school teachers received a monthly stipend of Sh15,000,

while secondary school teachers received Sh20,000, though certain deductions were applied to these allowances.

For secondary school intern teachers, the allowance breakdown was as follows:
– Special Salary: Ksh 20,000.00
– Two NSSF Deductions: Ksh 18,000.00
– Three NHIF Deductions: Ksh 750.00
– NET pay amounting to: Ksh 18,170.00

Primary school intern teachers had the following breakdown:
– Special Salary: Ksh 15,000
– Two NSSF Deductions: Ksh 900
– Three NHIF Deductions: Ksh 500.00
– NET pay amounting to: Ksh 13,600.00

In essence, TSC’s decision to discontinue the internship program and focus on recruiting teachers with long-term contracts is a response to the evolving needs and demands in the education sector.

As the 100% transformation initiative continues to reshape education in the country,TSC is adjusting its approach to ensure an adequate and well-prepared teaching workforce capable of meeting these evolving requirements.
