Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman Wafula Chebukati broke his silence after President William Ruto announced a vacancy for his position.

The head of state made the announcement in a Gazette Notice three months before his term of office expires in January 2023.

In his statement, Chebukati welcomed the move, noting that the early recruitment would ensure a smooth transition from one government to another.

He added that he was determined to preserve the institutional memory, unlike previous governments.

“I welcome the decision to publish imminent vacancies for the positions of IEBC Chairman and 2 Commissioners that will be officially vacant from January 18, 2023.

“This ensures a smooth transition and preservation of institutional memory, which was not the case before,” Chebukati announced.

In the Government Gazette of Friday 21 October, Ruto advertised the vacancy alongside the positions of two other supervisory directors whose term ends in January 2023.

These are Commissioners Boya Molu and Abdi Guliye.

“Now, therefore, in the exercise of the powers conferred on me, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya, inform of imminent vacancies in the above-mentioned positions,” read the message signed by the head of state.

Chebukati was appointed chairman in December 2016. He was part of the committee overseeing the 2017 and 2022 general elections.

While declaring Ruto the winner on Monday, August 15, Chebukati confirmed that he would leave his position in January 2023.

“This was my last election as Commission President,” Chebukati said at Kenya’s Bomas after the event was marred by chaos.
