The Ministry of Education has issued a raft of requirements that primary schools must meet before being allowed to host Junior Secondary School (JSS) students later. The ministry will consider the enrollment of the students, the availability of facilities, and security to determine which schools will host the junior secondary students and which ones will be merged
CBC requirements set by government The government through the Ministry of Education has set standards to be met by schools before they accommodate Junior Secondary School students. Among them is the number of students per class, the ministry stated that each class must have 45 students and those who did not meet the quorum would be merged with other schools within a two-kilometer radius.
Schools must also prove that they have the requisite number of CBC-trained teachers who are diploma and graduate teachers. The task force would also assess the ratio between the number of teachers and the non-teaching staff. Schools must also ensure the availability of enough land to host both groups of primary pupils and JSS learners including two extra classes for the JSS group
They must also have the proper infrastructure to provide proper sanitation, hygienic food handling and sufficient playgrounds for the learners.
Schools will also be assessed on their preparedness to handle extra subjects students will undertake especially those that will require practical’s. The government also stipulated that the institutions must have laboratories to handle integrated science lessons. schools must plan their finances to ensure everything is in place in terms of equipped laboratories. “We must roll up our sleeves, and invest heavily in it to make sure that we not only have the science laboratory but it is fully equipped with the required equipment, of course, the science laboratory also requires a technician, somebody who is well versed with how the science lab operates,”
President William Ruto proposed that schools can work smart to ensure the available resources are properly maximized to comfortably accommodate the learners.
“In fact, it is possible to convert some of the extra classrooms that were already built into a laboratory and it is possible for schools that share the same compound with a secondary school for grade seven to carry out their laboratory work,” Ruto explained. Some schools have prepared for the switch from primary school to junior secondary school by introducing a change in the school uniform which they say is a morale booster.
