Governors and Deputy Governors in Mombasa, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru was elected as the new Council of Governors (CoG) chairperson, a position she will assume for the next one year.

Through consensus, it was unanimously agreed that Governor Waiguru would spearhead the council and would be deputized by Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi and Nandi’s Stephen Sang as the Chief Whip.

Here is a list of committee chairpersons who were also elected;

1. Finance, Planning and Economic Affairs – Fernades Barasa

2. Health – Muthomi Njuki

3. Agriculture, Livestock and Cooperatives – Kenneth Lusaka

4. Water, Forestry and Natural Resources Management – Andrew Mwadime

5. Land, Housing and Urban Development – Anyang’ Nyong’o

6. Education – Eric Mutai

7. Legal, Constitutional Affairs and Intergovernmental Relations – Mutula Kilonzo

8. Gender, Youth, Culture, Sports and Social Services – Simon Kachapin

9. Environment and Climate Change – Wilber Ottichilo

10. Blue Economy – Issa Timamy

11. Energy, Roads, Transport and Infrastructure – Kimani Wamatangi

12. Arid, Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL) and Disaster Management – Nathif Jama

13. Resource Mobilization and Partnerships  – Cecily Mbarire

14. ICT and Knowledge – Wisley Rotich

15. Security and Foreign Affairs– Dhadho Godhana

16. Trade, Industry, Manufacturing and Enterprise Development- Wavinya Ndeti

17. Human Resource, Labour and Social Welfare – Johnson Sakaja

18. Tourism and Wildlife – Patrick ole Ntutu.

The CoG Vice Chairperson shall chair last committee which brings together the Executive and the Chairpersons of all Committees is Liaison, Management and Resource Management Committee.

In a statement on Saturday, the council said it will prioritize;

  • Engagement with the Presidency to define a shared roadmap for actualizing the commitments on devolution;
  • Establish linkage between the Council and Parliament to facilitate review and development of policies and laws that are aligned to the devolved system of Governance; and
  • Support structured capacity strengthening of Counties to ensure compliance with statutory obligations in order to guarantee uninterrupted operations of the County Governments and smooth delivery of services to citizens.
  • Foster engagement with Development Partners and other stakeholders in the implementation of Devolution
