National Police Announce Major Changes in the Service
The government on Monday, June 5, 2023 announced new changes in the police service. The changes impacted several officers. Reliable sources confirm that Nairobi Regional Commander Adamson Bungei has been promoted to a higher rank within the police force.
Alongside him, Police Spokesperson Dr Resila Onyango and Director of the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU) David Birech have also received promotions.
Bungei’s was promoted to the position of Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), bestowing him with new responsibilities and greater authority within the service.

In addition, the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) has promoted the current Police Spokesperson, Dr Resila Onyango, to the rank of Assistant Inspector General of Police.
Similarly, David Birech, the current Director of the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU), has been elevated to the position of Senior Assistant Inspector General of Police (S/AIG).
Bungei boasts an impressive 35-year career in the police service, having held various positions, including Commandant of the Kenya Police College. He is a distinguished alumnus of the Kenya School of Government and the University of Nairobi.
Recognized for his outstanding service, Bungei has received prestigious accolades such as the Distinguished Service Medal, the Police Medal, and the Long Service Medal.
Throughout his tenure as Nairobi Regional Commander, he prioritized fostering relationships between the police and local leaders to combat criminal activities. Notably, Bungei has been a vocal advocate for human rights, consistently condemning instances of police brutality.
The promotions come at a time Bungei was being criticized on how he handled the first wave of Azimio demonstrations. However, the appointment shows commitment of the National Police Service to recognize and reward exceptional individuals within its ranks.
