No Pay For Contractors Not adhering To CBC Classroom Standards, State Warns

Government payments will only be approved for contractors who comply with construction requirements during their job.

Moses Gicharu, the Deputy County Commissioner of the Lugari Sub-County, warned at the Luanda-Lugari Secondary School, where he was monitoring classrooms with the Competency Based Curriculum  that some contractors were compromising the safety standards of the classrooms and that they would not be paid until the errors were rectified.

Gicharu acknowledged that there was pressure to complete the construction of CBC classrooms, but this does not mean that contractors should rush to complete the work at the expense of building quality and safety.

The deputy county commissioner stated that the Sub-County CBC Implementation and Monitoring Committee was enthusiastic about the construction works to prevent future building collapses.

Gicharu stated, “Our committee is comprised of Public Works Engineer and other technical officials who are advising us accordingly, on whether the construction works were safe for our children and teachers or not.

He stated that if the construction engineers report that quality and safety requirements were violated throughout the construction process, then payments will not be granted until the work is redone to the appropriate levels.

“I am asking the contractors to always stick to the building standards and the codes of regulations in both government and private construction works,” Gicharu added.

Gicharu stated that the contractors were aware of the repercussions of not adhering to the building’s requirements and that they should always adhere to the construction standards specified by national and international building and construction organizations.

In addition, the DCC stated that contractors who have won bids to construct new government facilities or renovate existing government buildings must never compromise quality requirements.

He stated that his office, together with other Departments, Ministries, and Agencies, was eager to ensure compliance with the government’s agenda and other safety measures.

Gicharu and the CBC Implementation and Monitoring team were inspecting CBC-built classrooms in the Lugari Sub-County while guaranteeing the safety of students and teachers.
