Possible Presidential Result Scenarios in the Upcoming Elections
Possible Presidential Result Scenarios in the Upcoming Elections
With a few days to elections, voters are eager to vote for their preferred candidates. However, we cannot have all in power. The final results will tell us the way forward.
Below are possible scenarios after you cast your vote:
1st Scenario: Winner garnering 50%+1
If one of the presidential candidates gets 50%+1 votes, IEBC will have 7 days to declare him the winner. After the results are declared, 7 daysis allowed for any petition. The supreme court has a limit of 30 days to determine the petition. If the court upholds the election, the winner will be sworn in 1st Tuesday, 7 days after the court ruling.
2nd Scenario: No clear winner i.e. No candidates got 50%+1 votes
If no candidate managed to get 50%+1 votes, IEBC will go ahead and declare the results within 7 days. 7 days is then allowed for petitions where the court will have a limit of 14 days to make a ruling. If the election results are upheld by the court, IEBC will have 30 days to prepare for a run-off. They will then follow the process as in 1st scenario and if the court upholds the results, the president-elect will be sworn in about 3 months after the election.
3rd Scenario: No clear winner with one nullification
If there is no clear winner and the court nullifies the election after petition, IEBC will the be required to prepare for fresh elections within 60 days after the court ruling. If there is no clear winner and the court upholds the results, IEBC goes ahead and plans for a run-off. If run-off results are upheld by the court, the president will be sworn in about 5 months 3 weeks after the election date.
If after nullification there is a clear winner and the court upholds the election the winner will be sworn in without a run-off.
4th Scenario: No clear winner with two nullifications
If there is no clear winner with two nullifications after two elections are held it will take about 9 months for presidents to be sworn in after due process has been followed and run-off elections held.
