Just in: Top Party Rejects Claims They Are Part of Azimio, Says They Are in Kenya Kwanza Alliance

Legislators from the United Democratic Movement (UDM) have complained to National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula the Registrar of Political Parties’ decision to attach them to the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition.

Eleven MPs, including UDM party leader and Mandera Senator Ali Roba, have taken issue with Registrar Ms. Anne Nderitu’s letter reminding Parliament of the party’s ties to Raila Odinga’s Azimio.

They have instead asserted that they are members of President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza Alliance, in accordance with a post-election agreement between UDM and the President’s coalition.

“It is indeed sad that despite the Post-Election Coalition Agreement that was signed between our Party and the Kenya Kwanza Coalition under the Political Parties Act, 2011, the Registrar of Political Parties has knowingly disregarded the law and has unlawfully associated ourselves and our Party with a non-existent coalition agreement with the Azimio Coalition,” they wrote in a letter.

The legislators include; Mr Roba, Senators; Mohamed Abbas (Wajir) and Mariam Omar and MPs; Bashir Abdullahi (Mandera North), Hassan Maalim (Banisa), Haro Abdul (Mandera South), Mangale Chiforomodo (Lungalunga), Yusuf Haji (Mandera West), Joseph Lekuton (Laisamis), Umulkheir Kassim (Mandera Woman Rep) and Sulekha Harun (nominated).

“Article 38 of the Constitution recognizes political rights, including the ability to make political decisions,” they noted.

In addition, they emphasized that Article 36 of the Constitution guarantees the right to freedom of association.
