Irungu Kang’ata, governor of Murang’a, has stated that the county’s existing scholarship program will be expanded to cover underprivileged and talented students from day secondary schools.
On Tuesday, Kang’ata spoke as he issued cheques equal to more than Sh. 48 million to pupils as part of a program called Nyota Zetu scholarships, and said that some parents find it difficult to pay day school costs.
He remarked that secondary schools eventually performed well on national assessments, highlighting the need to assist students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
The Nyota Zetu initiative, which was initiated by former Governor Mwangi wa Iria four years ago, provides complete Scholarships to one thousand deserving students annually.
The initiative has exclusively considered needy and gifted pupils enrolled in public and private high schools.
Currently the programme has a total of 4, 000 beneficiaries with Kang’ata lauding Nyota zetu scholarship for enabling students from poor families to get educated.
“I promise to continue with this programme which was started by the previous county government. My Administration will make necessary changes and expand it to benefit more learners including those from day schools,” he said at Kimorori grounds.
Kang’ata stated that the recipients of the scholarship will be chosen fairly so that those in need will receive priority.
He added that in order to promote education in the county, his administration will award students who place first through third in the KCPE in public elementary schools.
“We will devise a plan to award Sh. 5,000 to the top three scorers on the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exam.” 15, 000. The incentive will serve to encourage our youngsters to study diligently,” he added.
In the meantime, the Governor noted that beginning the following year, the County Administration will offer a one-year internship to college and university graduates.
He added that the internship program will provide students with experience as they seek long-term employment opportunities.
“I will also reach out to companies which want to work with the county government to ensure they offer internship or employment opportunities to students from Murang’a,” he added.
